Expert Review: TaylorMade Milled Grind 3 Chrome Wedge
This is my 54° Custom MyMG3. I had THUNDER printed on the back to remind me this club was 2° stronger / 8 yards longer than the 56° wedges I played in every set before this one. All photos courtesy of Dan DG
About this Review: This review is my honest opinion of the golf club, which I purchased in February of 2022.
My take
For years Taylormade has been renowned as an incredible driver company, but this season, it's their wedges that have my attention. The 2022 TaylorMade Milled Grind 3 Chrome Wedge is an incredible looking teardrop wedge designed to be stable and versatile, with the ability to execute every shot on the course. While this is certainly a pro caliber club, the wide range of bounce options, and heavier sole, make this a forgiving enough club that almost any golfer can put in their bag with confidence.

How it performs
What I was looking for
I was looking for a wedge that could be used for roughly 125 yard shots that would be versatile enough to also play around the greens and in greenside bunkers. In the bunker, I was looking specifically for something for playing plugged and poor lies that require taking more sand.
Why I chose this club
I went with the MG3 here because it was a seamless transition from my P series irons into these wedges. It's a little heavier, so I have an easy time controlling flight on full swings, and maintaining tempo on half swings. The heavier sole and higher bounce also made this an incredible option for Bunker shots, plugged lies, and for hitting low running pitch shots from tight grass.
What I love about it
- Launch: This club comes stock with a DG S200. It's a heavy and stable shaft that allows me to control the launch and window easily.
- Forgiveness: This club is more forgiving than I would expect from a tour club. Moving weight from the Hosel lower in the club produces increased stability and created a much more stable club than I was expecting.
- Feel: A well struck centered strike feels perfect! The club also provides a ton of feedback on a mishit, without being overly punishing.
- Spin: This club has great spin. I don't know if its the “micro grooves” or raw face, but this club always stops, or pulls back on the greens
- Bounce: Bounce varies club to club but is generally on the higher side in the MG3 series. For most of us, more bounce equates to less chunks.
- Around the Green: This club is really excellent for both greenside bunkers and chip and roll shots.
- Full Shots: I bought this club specifically to be my last full swing club and first true wedge in my bag. This club is an excellent transition from any players, or players distance series iron into a higher lofted wedge set.
- Aesthetic Appeal: This is a very attractive wedge that is fully customizable.
- Innovation: The MG3 uses milling on both the face and sole to create optimal spin and turf interaction. If Tiger thought that would help, I think I’ll agree.
- Customizable: I love that I can get this wedge customized via MyMG3 and change the shaft, grips, loft+lie and have it personalized.
Issues I’ve encountered
- Bounce: At 11°, this is the highest bounce wedge in my set. I can't use this club to hit high lofted shots off tight lies.
- Around the Green: The MG3 is a little heavier than some wedges. I find it more difficult to hit light finesse and flop shots with this club.
Best Shot with this Wedge
This wedge performs incredibly well on full swing shots, as well as bunker shots.
The best shots I've seen executed with the MG3 came back to back at the 2022 Masters Tournament on the 18th hole. Rory Mcilroy capped off his fourth round by holing a sandy from the greenside bunker to finish 8 under on the day in 2nd place. Immediately after, his playing partner, Collin Morikowa, holed a similar shot from the same bunker on 18, sending the crowd wild!
Value for the money vs. other options
All of the premium wedges cost roughly the same amount. If you can't hit the green with your approach, this wedge is an invaluable club that is worth every penny.
Final verdict
This is an incredibly attractive wedge that feels great and performs even better. It's versatile enough to hit any shot a player can imagine and forgiving enough to provide “just enough” help on poor contact. This is one of the best wedges I have ever tested, particularly from the bunker.
