Expert Review: Callaway Apex Pro Hybrid

About this Review: This review is my honest opinion of the club which I purchased in October of 2021 with my own money.
My take
The Callaway Apex Pro Hybrid is a great hybrid geared toward the elite player looking for a club that cuts through the rough a little easier than a fairway wood or iron. I love the smaller head in the pro model for helping to hit low launching shots as well as high, soft shots into greens.

How it performs
What I was looking for
I wanted to find a hybrid that would add a little more versatility from the rough and into long par 3’s than my 5 wood. I love how I can change launches with this club a lot easier than I could with a 5 wood especially for par 3’s and hitting into a par 5 in two.
Why I chose this club
I bought this club purely because I loved the look of the club at address. I like a smaller head with a neutral face that gives me confidence to work both ways. I didn't really consider buying another hybrid; it was either the Apex Pro or a utility driving iron like the Titleist U-505 driving iron.
What I love about it
- Feel: The feel of this hybrid is a very soft off the face feel when hit solidly. I’ve noticed a more solid feel rather than just a ping.
- Sound: The sound of this hybrid is solid and not clicky. It’s a dull sound that just sounds like a perfect shot.
- Workability: I am able to work this hybrid both ways and have great trajectory control.
- Shaft Feel: I play the graphite design shaft that is a very stiff hybrid shaft. This shaft feels very stable and sturdy especially at impact.
- Shaft Performance: The performance is great because the graphite design shaft gives me a lower ball flight but still has the capability of hitting it high.
- Aesthetic Appeal: I love a plain black head without alignment makers so this is perfect for me.
- Grip Feel: I play the Lamkin full cord grip. This is a full cord grip that is firm-feeling, but is a little better for sweat absorption in hotter weather like Florida.
- Launch Angle: With the combination of a lower launching shaft and the pro model head, I have a lower to mid ball flight with this club. I am still able to hit it high when needed but I love the ability to flight the ball through the wind with this hybrid.
- Spin: The pro model Apex hybrid is a low-spinning, lower launch hybrid because of its smaller compact head and centered weighting. The shaft combination keeps that spin rate low but I can add spin when needed.
Issues I’ve encountered
- Forgiveness: I don’t think this is a very forgiving club. If you are looking for a higher launching, more forgiving club I would not get the pro model. The small head and more centered weighting will not launch the ball high and with the small more compact head design, the amount of forgiveness is not the same as the Apex hybrid.
- Adjustability: I do hate that this is a non-adjustable club. With new technology in golf, having a club that you can change loft and lie on the fly is a great tool to have for optimizing ball flight. A hybrid like the Apex 2021 hybrid and Titleist Hybrid lines will have that adjustability if needed.
- Distance: This club is not a distance hybrid; for pure distance I would look at another club.
Best shot with this club
I have hit a ton of great shots with this club, but the best was in a tournament on a par 5, 252 yards uphill and a high draw that curved about 5 feet to a middle pin and landed 10 feet away for eagle. It was a shot that came out better than pictured and i'll remember that beauty for a while.
Value for the money vs. other options
In my opinion it's almost undervalued for a hybrid. The price point of this club is a great value for the look and capability it offers. I have tested other hybrids like the TaylorMade Stealth and the sound was not what I liked and other hybrids that looked too big so I couldn't find a head that looked pleasing.
Final verdict
The Final Verdict for the Callaway Apex Pro Hybrid is this: what an amazing club. It’s a beautiful looking hybrid that gets through the rough and will have you hitting precision shots day in and day out. Please make sure you get fit for the proper shaft, but when you do you will love the almost old school playability and feel from this club.
