Having a smaller diameter means your hand won't fatigue as easily. T adjustable straps come with a security lock which is a nice addition, as well as a pointed steel tip for breakthroughs when the conditions turn icier.

The Carbon Compactor poles are very easy to transport due to being able to be broken down into 3 pieces, yet they remain rigid and secure due to BD's Z-pole tech. Great lightweight backcountry pole.

These are lightweight and fantastic poles that have Leki's signature trigger grip - the wrist strap easily clicks off from the pole so you don't have to take your glove in and out when you get to the chairlift. Keep the wrist strap on your glove and just unhook the pole - quick and easy!

Leki makes great poles! These are the shorter of the two options, but I prefer a shorter pole as it forces you to focus on your skis while learning and not use the pole as a crutch mechanism.

Not only are these extremely strong and light but they have a unique strap. The pole strap on these are actually straps that go on your glove. The glove straps have a little loop that clips in and out of the pole easily. it's not for everyone but I personally love it. You can stay attached to your poles and not actually hold them on the lift with no worries. It offers great support on your hands to push off with the poles and they have a safety release so if you have a hard fall or got the pole caught while moving it would come off before any injury.

The pole strap on these attaches to your glove and then you can click in and out of the pole itself. This is to help avoid wrist, shoulder, and thumb injuries, so when you fall, your pole will pop off and save your body! Top choice by FAR!

Lightweight shaft and comfortable grips! The only real difference with Jr poles is they're a little narrower for a lower weight and come in a smaller size range but otherwise it's just like a pretty standard adult pole.

Expert Q&A
Ski poles are based off of your height. There is a recommended length for your height for fixed length poles. There are also adjustable poles that you can change to fit your needs - longer for skating across flats, a bit shorter for skiing. Park skiers often like shorter poles, or ride without poles completely.
Ski poles are for helping you navigate the mountain, they also help with balance and ski form. Pole planting is the act of keeping your hands up, swinging the pole forward and using it to initiate your turn while skiing.
You want a pole that fits your budget, style, and desired use. If you’ll be hiking/touring in the backcountry, you might want an adjustable pole. If you have had shoulder or wrist injuries you might want a pole with a safety releasable strap that breaks away when you fall. If you like using pole straps but hate the hassle at chairlifts, you might want a trigger grip. Poles come with powder baskets or piste baskets (sometimes both) and that’s an important thing to consider as well.
Ski poles range from $30 to $300! Huge range depending on the features and materials. Cheaper poles tend to be aluminum and a bit heavier. More expensive poles are carbon and lighter, and usually have nicer grips, pole straps, and potentially other features like adjustability, interchangeable baskets for piste or powder, pole straps that are removable for easy lift rides, or compatibility with backcountry features like a whippet fall prevention device (basically an ice axe approximation). All a matter of priorities and preferences.
A ski pole is measured off your height. There are tables that get you in the right size, but it’s generally based off of this action: Flip the pole upside down and grip it just under the basket so your thumb is touching the basket and the rubber grip is on the ground. When you’re holding a pole like this your elbow should be at a 90 degree angle. If your hand is higher, then the pole is too long.
