Product details

A staple in the mid-range fly rod market, the Recon® by Orvis® is a smooth-casting, fast action fly rod. The Recon rod would be ideal for any angler who wants a user-friendly, lightweight rod with plenty of backbone for making accurate long casts or tossing larger flies. Key Features: - Fast Action – Fast action rods suit more aggressive casters or casters who are looking to throw larger flies, nymphs, or streamers for longer distances. - Pewter Type III Anodized Aluminum Reel Seat w/ Wood Insert – The wood insert gives the rod a very high-end, classy look while still being durable and functional. - USA Made – Orvis has more direct control over the quality and craftsmanship of the rods made in-house here in the USA. - Orvis 25 Year Guarantee – The Orvis warranty will fix or replace any broken rod for a small handling fee, regardless of reason.

Review by Curated Expert Jacob Jesionek
The Orvis Recon is the perfect fly rod for the intermediate flyfisher who is becoming serious about their game. It gave me the ability to unlock a new level of casting that I wasn't achieving before while not breaking the bank. The fast action allowed me to really figure out how to cast those tight loops and add distance and confidence to my fly fishing. The first time I fished dry flies with this rod, I realized just how important action is, and the Recon allowed me to present flies more accurately than ever before.

The Orvis Recon is a seasoned angler's rod, and one that many of us end up on after fishing with 3 or 4 rods for several years. If you are the type of person who purchases a single high quality item once, with the expectation that you'll use it for decades (like a solid winter coat), rather than several sequential lower quality items, then this is your rod. If you don't start here, I can assure you will end up here. Save your money over the long term and invest in the tools of your vocation early.

I have never met a person that had a negative thing to say about their Orvis Recon. And those that use them, use them for every situation. Typically, as you advance in your fly fishing career, you add more and more top-tier specialized rods - tailor made to a type of water or species. The Recon is the exception to this. This is THE higher tier versatility rod. It loads quickly for short casts on small streams, and packs enough action and power to launch long casts. I never seen a rod perform in windy condition like the Recon. This rod is built with the same construction techniques and performance attributes of Orvis' $1,000 Helios series rods, for half the price. Like Orvis' other mid to high tier rods, this one comes with a 25 year guarantee, but you can honestly expect a solid 50 years out of it.

The Recon is a workhorse. Can handle big flies in the wind and also give a delicate presentation with the smallest of dry flies. Great for all-around fishing for any level, from beginner to expert.

All around trout - even works well as a light tackle bass rod! Fast action rod with incredible accuracy - throws all sizes of dry fly and excels with smaller streamers and nymph rigs.

Accuracy at long distances, with enough backbone to control the brutes you'll find in freshwater like bass, carp, and musky. Also great for smaller snook, bones, and permit.

The best rod for all scenarios in coastal waters. It is ready for the bigger fish but won't fatigue your arm over time like stiffer 8 wts. Basically "feel like you're fishing for smaller game fish while actually catching and landing with ease, larger game fish"
