The Wilson D9 is a great driver, particularly for the price. Wilson tested hundreds of possible club faces to design the longest hitting and most forgiving driver possible. Fans of composite drivers will like the composite carbon crown on the D9.

The Wilson D9 driver is much improved from the previous Wilson models. Wilson worked closely with major champ and Wilson staffer Gary Woodland in the development of the D9. There has been little to no presence of Wilson drivers in the bags of golfers on tour and the D9 is their best shot at changing that. In the new head they were able to move the center of gravity lower and to the back to increase forgiveness and MOI (moment of inertia). The D9 still lacks the ball speed and some performance compared to those more well known names, but it is a significant improvement over the D7 and a great option for most golfers at a cheaper price point than the more well known brands' current drivers.

By dividing the face into a series of fractal zones, each tuned for explosive distance, our Peak Kinetic Response Face optimizes both forgiveness and ball speed. Wilson also states the sound, feel and performance have improved. The three-layer composite crown is made from Kevlar and carbon fiber to neutralize vibration for a solid feel and satisfying acoustics.  It’s also incredibly lightweight, which means a lower center of gravity and faster club head speeds for better ball flight and more distance. The Wilson D9 is a upgrade over the Wilson D7 family of clubs. Wilson invested more in their R&D for the D9 and has designed it for a larger spectrum of golfers than the D7.

The Wilson D9 is much improved over the D7. The team at Wilson's goal with the D9 was to get a Wilson driver back into the bags of tour players. They worked closely with major champ Gary Woodland on the design of the D9. The center of gravity was moved lower and further back to increase spin and forgiveness over the D7.

Wilson has two model options called the D7 and D9. The D9 is the newest model offering from Wilson. The D7 offers a Carpenter Custom 455 Face with a thin, hot surface for incredible feel and increased ball speed. Superlight design means faster club head speeds with less effort and a new crown construction with thin cast pockets adds structure while minimizing weight, creating great-playing, highly versatile fairway woods that always get you to the green. A premium maraging steel insert provides a thin, hot face increasing both feel and distance performance. The D9 features a Peak Kinetic Response Face which optimizes both forgiveness and ball speed all across the club face. The face is divided into fractal zones to fine-tune each section for explosive distance. Is the Wilson D9 a forgiving driver? Yes, the D9 is a very forgiving driver. In addition to this club having a larger than average sweet spot on the face, the crown of the club is made from carbon fiber and kevlar which are very lightweight allowing the majority of the weight in the club do be moved lower, lowering the overall center of gravity of the club. A club having the center of gravity low and towards the back of the club head, like is the case in the D9, increases the spin rate that the club will produce making it more forgiving.

The Wilson D9 driver is a very forgiving driver. It is designed to be most forgiving on miss hits towards the heel and toe. This increases ball speed and distance on miss hit drives.

Which iron will a 9-Wood replace? It's hard to say one club replaces another because each club has its inherent spot for each player. When it comes to loft and distance, the 9-Wood is most similar to the 4-5 iron, for most sets. The 9-Wood is good for the player who isn't comfortable with hybrids, and who may not be confident with their 4 or 5 iron off a bad lie or the rough. The 9-Wood is a great choice for the newer player, due to its ease of hitting out of those poor conditions, saving shots on the scorecard. Essentially, if you struggle with your long irons on poor lies, and aren't a huge fan of hybrids, the 9 wood can be a great replacement as a rough rescue club, that is easier to hit, and get the ball in the air and still go the distance.

What iron can a 9 wood replace? A 9 wood can have a loft from 22-28 degrees depending on the setup. Depending on the loft of the 9 wood, it can replace a 4 iron or 5 iron. An average 4 iron has a loft in the range of 19-24 degrees and a 5 iron has an average loft in the range of 26-27 degrees making the 9 wood a viable replacement for either a 4 or 5 iron depending on loft.
