MIPS stands for Multi-directional Impact Protection and is an added level of safety technology so it goes without saying that extra protection in a helmet is a good thing. MIPS is now incorporated into over 120 brands and over 800 different helmets. The MIPS system is a low friction layer that sits between the EPS foam and the helmet liner, and allows for a sliding motion of 10 to 15mm in all directions. This aims to reduce the transfer of rotational motion onto your brain.

MIPS helmets are absolutely worth the added cost over a standard foam cell helmet. The thin liner and ability of the MIPS system to move independent of the foam helmet shell provides a 10% decrease in rotational force upon impact. The large majority of cycling crashes result in a large rotational force and even though 10% does not seem like a large increase, it can be the difference between a traumatic injury and walking away from a crash.

The POC Octal is now called the POC Octal MIPS and uses MIPS technology for added protection.

The POC Octal helmet does not have the MIPS (multi impact protection system) installed. It also does not have SPIN, which is POC's in house MIPS clone.

Yes and No. The POC Octal is available in a version that has MIPS and a version that ships with SPIN. Both technologies are similar and are designed to prevent rotational trauma to the neck and brain during the event of an impact.
