I live in the Wasatch and tour in the backcountry around 60-70 days per season, and have quite a few years under my belt. I have paired down my kit to be efficient and minimal, and I am always on the lookout for a shell that is breathable enough for the hike up and beefy enough for high winds on the summit and down ski. The Dawn Patrol hits this balance perfectly with plenty of tech options at a great price.
I have issues with shells that fit well, and I tend to gravitate toward a slimmer fit with shells, which are harder to find these days. The Dawn Patrol is a nice slim fit with enough room for a light-down jacket or synthetic warm layer underneath.
I hope BD doesn't stop making this shell because I will be purchasing it for years to come.
Ideal for
- Backcountry touring and mountaineering
- Hi aerobic capable and very breathable
- Offers lots of features and plenty of ventilation
Not ideal for
- This model comes with snow skirts on the wrists which I hate. I cut them out.

This guy will answer as many questions as you can throw his way- even if you ask the same question 5 different ways. NEVER felt like he got annoyed with me. Josh helped me figure out exactly what it is that I needed. Ive been a skateboarder for 20+ years and he has helped me transition to snowboarding by guiding me into the direction that most fits a person with heavy skateboarding background. I am truly grateful for the time Daniela spent taking care of my many questions as I decided on equipment for skiing. There are so many measurements to deal with (Daniela mentioned ones I didn’t even know I needed to know) it was frustrating. She held my hand, and I’m confident I have something for my skill level. I was in the market for a new snowboard and bindings for the 2024 season. I have had the same set up for about 10 years now and was ready to invest in a solid set up. I filled out the Curated questionnaire and was lucky to land Dave as my Curated expert. I chatted it up with Dave on what I like to do on the mountains and within 20 min I received his recommended line up of boards and bindings.
