Any fly fishing angler who is setting up a fly fishing reel should consider Orvis Dacron Backing. The backing comes in 30lbs and 20lbs test strength and is available in white and fluorescent orange. The hollow material allows for splicing and the dacron material is low stretch with great knot retention strength.
Ideal for
- This is a great backing material assist in properly positioning fly line on a reel.
- This low stretch material holds knots well.
- Available in fluorescent orange to assist with quick visability.
Not ideal for
- This material has a larger diameter than other backing material so a smaller amount can be spooled on a reel.

Looses color

Orange Dacron line resembled Orange Chalk line
Originally posted at www.orvis.com on Oct 4, 2023While the line was Dacron and orange, it was more like a chalk line than a died line. By the time I had it spooled on my reel, my hands and reel were full of orange chalk that smeared when I tried to brush it off and thus I had to wash it off. Not sure if the line will remain orange once it gets wet or if it will fade and stain everything around it like my fly line, reel, hands and rod reel seat.
