The Ultralight Fishing Vest offers a new modern, sleek, and functional design that integrates perfectly with the concept of the Ultralight Wading System. The low-profile design keeps load closer to the body and the slimmer design reduces the "layered bulk" of conventional vests. Lightweight material, treated with DWR, dries faster and breathes better. Strategically integrated mesh offers ventilation and form-fitting comfort. Eleven pockets, 6 exterior, 4 interior, and 1 rear. Four large vertical chest pockets for fly boxes, two of which have internal stretch mesh organization pockets. Two exterior vertical chest pockets higher on the shoulder hold leaders, tippet and other accessories. Two interior vertical chest pockets hold valuables and the right pocket has a key clip. Lower interior stretch mesh pockets form to load for maximum comfort. Highly adjustable sliding clip closure allows you to adjust vertically to the most comfortable position. Two multi-function hook-and-loop fly patches hide a port for zinger. Construction design allows nippers to nest under patch for quick but out of the way access. Forceps can be slid up from the outside underneath patch for easy access. Two elastic cords on exterior of chest pockets for adding accessories and tippet bar. Soft poly/spandex blend lined foam collar for maximum comfort around the neck. Internal webbing loop for hanging the vest. Large rear zipper pocket securely holds extra gear. Tri-ring net holder on the upper back. In storm gray.

Shell: woven nylon w/ DWR finish. Collar: polyester/spandex. Fabric Mesh: poly/spandex stretch mesh. Washable. Imported.

Lacking connections points to carry gear and tools

Originally posted at www.orvis.com on Dec 20, 2024
This vest is light but could be much better. There are not enough connection points on the outside to clip on gear and tools. The hidden spots under the fly patches to connect tools are too difficult to access. The holes are too small and the fly patch is too tight to get your fingers underneath to reach the holes. The long zippered pockets in the front are just the right size to fight fly boxes. The vest material is nice quality and it is comfortable to wear but it lacks a lot of functional points for connecting gear in the front. I give this 2 stars for the quality but for the price it should be much more functional.

Good design generally, but many upgrades needed

The Ultralight vest is the best I have owned and I have gone through about a dozen top name vests prior to this one. The vertical pockets are easy to access and the vest is comfortable. I added a number of D-Ring attachments inside the pockets so I could tether fly boxes to the vest. Every high end vest should have strong loops inside every pocket by now IMO, yet the manufacturers don't provide them. Drop enough fly boxes and eventually it dawns on a person to add these and secure boxes and gear. There are not enough attachment points for tools. I used the tippet loops for zingers and found a way to attach shock cord to a D-Ring I added on the left chest pocket so it holds 2 or 3 tippet spools. Interior pockets made of thin mesh fabric seem flimsy but good enough for gloves and a hanky or a thin hand towel. I would have used the same exterior material for the inside pockets. Big back pocket also relies on the flimsy mesh. Time will tell if this is adequate or the reason to send the vest back to Orvis. I'm cautiously optimistic it will hold up if I am gentle with it but most people want a vest capable of being overstuffed and abused a bit and not fail. This vest I would not recommend trying to stuff a lot of things in the back pocket, specifically no containers with sharp edges because it may slice through the mesh side on the interior and fall into the river. It should be ok for a packable rain jacket if gently pushed into the vest. I would like to see vertical pockets have a little more separation between the zippers. I would like to see a molded hard shell pocket for sunglasses in an improved version. I would prefer a full size gear garage that covers tools and keeps them from moving around on the front of the vest and getting tangled. Garage should be able to contain nippers, homostats, snake river mud, leader straightener, amadaou patch, needle poker for hook eyes, sierra or other knot tool, threader tool like the Orvis blue plastic fish. The garage door should have a magnetic closure. I would like a second smaller garage for flotant and dessicant bottles that are tethered with something like the fishpond holders. Again, magnetic closure for the garage hatch Lots of opportunities to make the vest better but the basic design is quite good. Material on the outside is really sturdy nylon. Just cannot understand the thin mesh on the inside.

I’m just a gal having fun learning to fly fish and ready to buy my own set up. Having minimal knowledge of what buy and loads of options out there, shopping can be a bit overwhelming. But, Johnny was so great to work with! His knowledge & attention to detail, and humor made it fun & easy figuring out a great starter set up best suited for me.

Matt helped me out of the fog and the overwhelming state I was in trying to buy my first Flyfishing set up…. I would still be fishing for gear a month from now if it wasn’t for him sticking his hand out to me.

I’ve dealt with more than a handful of folks on fb marketplace that were downright aggressive, mean, and unhelpful to me over a series of exchanges in my search for gear. Matt was everything but. He not only pointed me in the right direction but he was friendly and knowledgeable as well. I needed all the help I could get and he was there. Thanknu again Matt.

I'm an intermediate angler with little knowledge of equipment. Rylyn was very responsive to all my questions, even the ones I thought were stupid. Very open about what he does and how he is paid. I highly recommend him.
