The Curated Take

This Orvis Battenkill Fly Reel is for someone looking for an school style fly reel made with modern materials. The Battenkill is a lightweight fully machined aluminum reel that pairs up with the lightest of rods and comes with a simple adjustable click n pawl drag system that will put enough pressure not to cause you to backlash. This simplistic reel puts you in control of palming the reel to put enough pressure when you hook into that big fish that takes some line out.

  • Click Pawl Drag – The simplicity of the drag system means very few pieces to break. There is also nothing more pleasant than the sound of a running fish fighting a click pawl drag system.
  • Easy Adjustable Right/Left Hand Retrieve – This reel is very easy to change the retrieve based on angler preference.
  • Heavy Bar Stock Aluminum – Heavy Bar Aluminum creates added durability without the extra weight.

This reel is perfect for anglers looking of a reel to use in small stream applications where a drag is not needed. This reel is not going to be suitable for anglers looking to target larger species that like to un line since there is no drag on it. The click pawl helps slow downs smaller fish a little bit but otherwise you will need to palm the reel if the fish fights you at all. It is also made in China not the US. It is covered by the Orvis warranty so if anything fails they will fix it. This is a great brook trout reel where you are using it mostly as a line holder. Super value as it has been around almost as long as the company and it's going to last forever since there really isn't much of anything to go wrong with it.

Pros
  • Classic styling.
  • Has been produced for 70 years.
  • Full lifetime warranty.
Cons
  • Click Pawl no drag system.
  • Made in China.

Pros
  • Machined Heavy Bar Stock Aluminum
  • 4 Position Click and Pawl Drag
  • Mid Arbor with narrow spool
