Great first rod for bluelining around New England
Originally posted at www.orvis.com on Sep 17, 2024I'm new to fly fishing as of the start of this year, but here's my 2 cents. I had picked up a competitor's 9' 5wt outfit online based on reviews for "the best first fly rods", but immediately realized that was not at all appropriate for what I wanted to do most, explore small rivers/creeks in the woods of New England. I stopped by my local fly shop to get properly set up and ended up with a 7'6" 3wt Clearwater paired with a Battenkill II click reel and Clearwater 3wt line. I ended up swapping the line out for Rio Creek 3wt (they were sold out of the Superfine line) and this is an awesome set-up for rambling through the woods. It's been knocked around while scrambling, been dropped/banged slipping in stream beds, and dealt with an infinite amount of caught branches in tight spaces. Even for a newb it has been very accurate out to about 40' with the sweet spot in the 15'-30' range. I've caught everything from 5" chubs to a 12" Smallmouth. This rod just keeps on trucking and looks no worse for wear other than the tiniest little marks on the butt. I see others have mentioned this rod being fragile, but that has not been the case at all for me. I would definitely buy again and have recommended it to anyone I know interested in fishing small streams. The only comment I would add about this series in general is that I would like to see a version in a shorter 2wt for those really tight spaces.

Cork grip
Originally posted at www.orvis.com on Sep 6, 2024Please, please, please revise this rod to have full composite cork handles. The Clearwater series has cork handles that just don’t hold up very well in fishing applications. Even with cork sealer fresh out of the tube, the cork has too much filler to last long. I have 3 Clearwater rods and love them completely, except for the hand grips. Switching to composite will not affect the overall value but will make the rod more usable. Some of Orvis rods already have this feature in select locations on the grip. Please consider a change for this line.
