The Curated Take

This product is specifically for the individual who it is looking at getting started in fly fishing. This outfit is completely setup and ready to hit the water and comes in a 5wt and 8wt option cover most freshwater applications. This fly rod is known for breaking in the tip section and I suggest grabbing an extra tip from TFO to keep on hand. For the price, this is one of the best outfit options under $250. One advantage that this fly rod outfit has over most in its category is the cast aluminum reel unlike the plastic molded reels from other manufactures.

  • Great for anyone getting started in fly fishing.
  • Setup and ready with backing, fly line, and leader.
  • Comes with a lifetime no-fault warranty.
  • These fly rods are known for breaking in the tip section. I consider the Pro II a better and more durable option.
  • Due to wear and tear, the fly line will need to be replaced within six months to a year. I suggest Rio Gold.

The TFO NXT Black label fly rod & kit is very useful for beginner fly fishers who are looking for the very best beginner set up that wont break the bank. This outfit is covered under TFOs lifetime no fault warranty which is as good as it gets for fly rod outfit warranties. It’s easy to cast, and really gets the job done for the occasional fly fisher. The 9’ 8 weight model is great for freshwater fishing out of windy conditions. In windy conditions like a fly fishermen will encounter on saltwater fishing trips this set up can not bust through wind. It’s lack of power is very noticeable in windy conditions. This outfit is meant for the beginner fly caster and casting distances are limited to around 50’ for good fly casters. The reel seat and cork could use an upgrade but in this price range its normal to see that issue. I would highly recommend this outfit to any fly fisher who just plans to fly fish occasionally and wants an outfit that wont break the bank and still has the best in the business warranty.

  • Top of the line warranty
  • Good intro to fly fishing fly rod outfit
  • Better than the average beginner fly rod set up
  • Reel seat and grip wear pretty easily
  • Restricted casting range
  • 9’ 8 weight model is not very well suited for saltwater fly fishing

This is a good starter rod. It tends to be good test rod for beginner fly fishers that will help you decide if the sport is for you. It is stout rod that handles strong fish well. The rod is on the heavier side and may tire your arm out with use throughout the day. The Nxt Black Label fly rod & kit makes casting an ease while still possessing the strength to land bigger fish.

  • flexible backbone
  • Strong drag system
  • Handles heavy fish well
  • Rod is fairly heavy
  • Prone to breaking if used improperly
