The Curated Take

By the Expert Community

This board is a great board for the advanced to expert rider looking to progress their riding. I purchased this board after I watched a video review by Travis Rice explaining why it was the best board he's ever ridden and I wanted to advance my riding as much as possible. This board is great for all mountain and it can handle all conditions you would see. It is great for everyday resort riding on groomers. It also preforms very well where I like to ride in the trees, being able to turn in very tight spaces. It really excels in the deep snow and powder conditions. The big nose and whale tale let the board surf the deep snow. Because of this design I was also able to size down with this board which helps with control at top speeds. The board grips the snow well and you feel safe wherever you are on the mountain. I have been able to advance my riding and take on any terrain there is out there with the Orca. Highly recommend.

This is possibly my favorite board. I prefer it over the golden because it still handles proper switch. Unless you are riding down the entire mountain switch, you don’t need the golden. Is the 'long floaty nose' good for deep snow rides?

Yes. The extended length and width of the nose increase the surface area, allowing the board to float more effortlessly on top of powder. In deep snow, having a longer nose helps to prevent the board from sinking and getting buried, enabling the rider to maintain better control and stay on the surface. The added floatation provided by the long nose allows for smoother turns, improved maneuverability, and a more enjoyable ride in powder. The Orca's design with a longer and wider nose, combined with a narrower waist and slightly stiffer tail, creates a directional shape that excels in powder. It helps to distribute the rider's weight more evenly and keeps the board riding on top of the snow, maximizing floatation and minimizing the chances of "submarining" or getting stuck.

Does the 'tight 7m trench gouging sidecut' help with control on firm snow?

Yes. The sidecut radius refers to the curvature of the edge from the nose to the tail of the snowboard. A tighter sidecut radius, such as the 7m radius on the Orca, means that the edge of the board will have a smaller turning radius. On firm snow conditions, a tighter sidecut radius can provide better edge hold and allow for quicker and more responsive turns. It helps the board engage with the snow more effectively, providing increased control and maneuverability. This can be particularly beneficial when carving or making precise turns on groomed runs or hardpack snow. The tight sidecut radius of the Orca, combined with its wider nose and narrower waist, gives it a unique blend of agility and stability on various types of snow. It allows riders to make tight and precise turns while maintaining good control and grip on firm or icy terrain.

How does the 'Whale Tail Technology' improve my rides?

The Whale Tail design incorporates a wide, pronounced tail that helps to increase surface area and improve floatation in deep snow. This allows riders to stay on top of the powder and experience a more effortless and enjoyable ride in deep snow conditions. The Whale Tail technology also maintains a narrower waist and a shorter length compared to traditional powder boards. This combination makes the Orca more nimble and responsive, allowing riders to easily maneuver through trees, tight spaces, or variable terrain. The wide tail provides additional stability and control for riding at higher speeds. It helps distribute rider's weights more evenly, which reduces the chances of catching an edge, allowing for smoother and more confident descents.

This alpha predator rules the slopes!

Posted on Aug 26, 2023
I have been a fan of mervin mfg for decades. I slid a t. Rice for years before I rode upon the back of the mighty orca. While I have enjoyed the firm and hard-charging t. Rice 161, I never felt that I could set the bindings back far enough for powder days (and it sometimes felt too stiff for butters.) This 156 orca solves both of these issues, along with the added bonus of being quick and slippery. It is a little more flexible and playful than what I have been accustomed to, making for a salty, splashy side-sliding implement. The back-set stance keeps my legs feeling fresh on the deepest days, and the bold nose slices through the chunder and keeps from any unintended diving. I was not sure before I took the plunge, but it is truly one of the best pre-season choices I have made. I love my Lib Tech Orca!

I had insomnia that night and found the Curated for the first time. I was curious about contacting an expert who turned out to be Andrew at 4 AM PST. I expected to get an answer a few hours later since it was in the middle of the night. I turned off my computer and went into bed he responded a few minutes later. Hopefully, I didn't wake him up, or maybe he's on EST time but either way, he's on his game.

I had many questions, and after a few days we finally got stuff figured out. Throughout the whole process he was very helpful and knowledgeable which is defiantly better then going to facebook marketplace. I tried that, but the information from an expert just helps much more. I would defiantly recommend Ryan to other customers.

I very much enjoyed working with Leo on my ski purchase. I had done some research on my own but had not settled on a particular ski. I came across Curated by accident and did not know I would be connected to a live person - and someone who is quite knowledgeable as well! Leo listened to what I was looking for and put together some recommendations personalized for me. I was able to review these on my own schedule and later discuss my questions with Leo to finalize my selection. I’ll definitely recommend Leo and Curated to friends and will be back for my next pair of skis!

My New Go To for anything snowboarding related

Frankie is A1, top notch and his ratings and reviews speaks for itself. I went to 3 different ski shops in my area and I was sized wrong, told certain brands were high quality when they weren’t, would have been paying to much and just put on a bad path overall. I’m glad I stumbled upon Curated. I threw so many questions at Frankie and he welcomed and answered them all. I needed a new board, boots and bindings and I got a great deal. Got a 2024 Libtech Coldbrew with Now IPO Bindings and 32 boots for less than my local ski shops offered for Never Summer, K2, etc., packages. I can’t wait to get on the mountain! Thanks again Frankie!
