The Curated Take
Do you love chasing powder, but need a board that charges with precision and can make you smile in any conditions? Take a serious look at the Jones Mind Expander. The ME was my daily driver last season, freeriding mostly in Colorado, plus a Tahoe-to-Bachelor road trip and a few days in the Tetons. I can't wait to strap in with it again this fall.
The shape screams powder. An elongated nose, with spoon-like 3D shaping and a ton of surface area, tapers back to a shorter more agile tail. The ME did an outstanding job keeping me upright and afloat in dry Aspen powder and happily surfing on top of a dense and deep Mt. Bachelor snowpack. Carves are smooth and super-easy to initiate, and the base is wickedly fast. Jones designs have the most glide out there. It will get you across the flats and keep you cruising through low-angle trees and you chase down the next pow stash.
Hiding beneath the clean graphics and powder-friendly design is an approachable board that's remarkably agile and stable on corduroy, ice, and chop. Rip groomers and charge steeps with confidence. The stance is centered over the camber profile for precision and power. Traction tech edges deliver excellent grip on ice and firm snow without sacrificing speed. The tail loads up quickly with plenty of pop. While somewhat limited by the shape, the ME rides switch reasonably well.
Tons of tech, done right, keeps the focus on fun!
- Surfy carves in trees and lower-angle slopes. Effortless turn initiation and very smooth edge to edge
- Precision and power riding steeps and more technical terrain, Confidence-boosting edge grip and very stable at high speeds
- Exceptional glide and speed on-piste and in powder. Reap the benefits of high-end design and materials
- Tapered, directional shape limits performance when riding switch in deeper, softer snow, Switch pow landings are doable, but takes a little forethought
The Mind Expander is an alternative all-mountain board that wants to slash every terrain feature in sight. Surf shapers Chris Christenson and Jeremy Jones designed the Mind Expander for the creative rider who draws lines blending freestyle, freeride, and surf styles. The blunted nose, full-size tail, tight sidecut, and 3D Contour Base 3.0 offer the nimble maneuverability of a directional board matched with the all-mountain performance of a directional twin. The Mind Expander features a Surf Camber profile that has a camber underfoot for better edge hold in variable conditions. To keep the playful board feel, the Mind Expander’s Bamboo Surf Core has V-core profiling that gives the board a softer flex between the feet for easy turn initiation and a stiffer flex in the tips so you won’t fold the nose. The Mind Expander is also built with Basalt Power Stringers for edge response, Rounded Recycled ABS Sidewalls for top sheet durability, and a super fast Sintered 8000 base.
