Who would love these

The Shift is perfect for skiers who want a binding that they can ski in the resort and has the same releasability as a downhill binding, but also allows for uphill hiking for skiers wanting to get into the backcountry too. It does require boots with tech inserts, however.

Why I recommend these

Perfect for resort and backcountry
Incredibly lightweight and durable
Superior confidence on downhill
Efficient uphill touring

Expert verdict

The Salomon Shift single-handedly changes how skiers approach resort skiing and backcountry skiing. In days of yore, skiers wishing to ski both types of terrain needed two different ski setups, but with the Shift, that's no longer the case. The Shift ingeniously transitions from a downhill mode that skis with the same confidence as any resort binding to a pin/tech-capable binding that can tour uphill as well. Skiers no longer need one set of skis for the resort and another set for the backcountry; the Shift fills both roles effortlessly. Keep in mind, the Shift does require boots with tech inserts in the toes to properly function on the uphill, so hybrid boots are required. And if you are looking for a dedicated touring binding, there are many lighter, better options than the Shift. But for skiers wanting one ski setup that can tackle both the rigors of resort skiing and allow for uphill travel, the Shift is a game-changer.

The Salomon S/Lab Shift MNC 13 Ski Bindings are the perfect choice for skiers who want to take their freeride capabilities to the next level. These bindings combine the touring efficiency of a pin (low-tech) binding with the performance of an alpine freeride binding, making them a truly compromise-free option. With these bindings, you can push your skiing and explore new boundaries on the mountain.

Key Features:

  • Revolutionary Design: Game-changer in ski binding design. It offers unprecedented versatility and performance, making it ideal for skiers who demand nothing but the best.
  • Touring Efficiency: Thanks to its low-tech pin design, this binding is incredibly efficient when touring uphill. You'll be able to conserve energy and enjoy longer tours without feeling weighed down.
  • Alpine Performance: When it's time to descend, these bindings offer exceptional power transfer and control. You'll be able to carve turns with precision and confidence, even in challenging terrain.
  • Multi-Norm Certified (MNC): Compatible with all boot sole norms - DIN, Touring and Walk To Ride (WTR) - without requiring any adjustment whatsoever.
  • Lightweight Construction: Despite its advanced features and capabilities, this binding is surprisingly lightweight. You won't feel weighed down or fatigued during long days on the mountain.

Ideal for resort skiers looking to go out of bounds or enjoy some uphill travel. Here Salomon delivers top downhill performance with great and easy uphill mode. This is a fully certified downhill binding as good as you will find on any set of skis, yet you can easily transition to use it uphill or for touring purposes.
Ideal for
  • Outstanding uphill and downhill performance
  • Great for anyone with a DIN setting over 7
  • Skiers north of 180 lbs that often need a 13 DIN binding
Not ideal for

The Salomon S/Lab Shift Bindings are a great backcountry binding option for anyone who feels like they will spend the majority of their season at the resort, or for backcountry skiers who want to prioritize the downhill experience. This is because they are a bit heavier than pin bindings that are found on other backcountry setups. The biggest advantage of... Read more

My girlfriend and I recently tried out the Salmon Shift MNC 13 bindings on her Elan Ripsticks 102 skis and we were both really impressed with their performance. The power transfer was excellent, allowing her to really lean into her turns and feel confident on the mountain. One of the standout features of these bindings was their ability to handle steep,... Steer away from this one

I would not recommend these bindings to anyone who is serious when it comes to alpine skiing and big mountain skiing. I’ve ridden these for a quarter of a season, they have been used maybe 6 times and every single time the walk function with the breaks fall of the rail, and it’s not very fun being in the mountain on the good days realising that you have a faulty binding and you need to dismount the whole thing to get the walk function/snow break back on again to have it fall off mid of the trip…. Will ask for a refund or to get another set of bindings that is not the shift!

Work really well for both touring and downhill

Originally posted at www.salomon.com on Jan 13, 2024
No noticeable difference with downhill binding - bit fiddly when switching to and from touring but otherwise no noticeable difference to touring bindings great product without any compromise in performance. Obviously heavier than pure touring but for what I want they are perfect

Erik was great!
5 /5
Erik was very helpful in assisting me to pick out my first pair of skis and ski bindings! I am an intermediate-level skier but have always used rental skis, so when looking to buy my own, I didn't have much of a knowledge-base. Erik was very helpful in answering my questions and with narrowing down which skis would be a good fit for me, taking into consideration my height/weight, skill level, skiing strengths and weaknesses, and price range. Thank you very much, Erik!

This was my first time buying snow sport gear of any kind. Tyler used the information I gave him to give me some really great choices and get me all set up with a board, bindings, and a helmet. He was very responsive to my questions and had recommendations for sizes and settings that I would not have been able to figure out on my own. He was great!

Tyler made great recommendations and really took the time to understand where my skill level is at and where I intend to ski. Ultimately, I was uncomfortable making the investment without trying the skis first, so I ended up buying a pair that I had rented several times and really liked. I had so many questions and came very close to purchasing skis a few months ago but now I that I have nearly finished this season I have a better idea of what I was looking for!

Nico helped me decide what length Atomic Mavens to get and bindings. He helped me decide that these skis will work on East Coast ice and Jackson Hole powder. I wish Curated was sticking around because it's such a great service. My cousin bought skis bindings and boots last year with curated and is stoked.

Tyler helped to reassure me on the board I have been eying, while also suggesting the best options for boots and bindings; he never tried to push the most expensive option, but rather gave me a number of choices to consider for myself (and in fact, recommended a cheaper boot option than the one I went with!). He was a great help and I feel confident that he helped me make a solid purchase.

I was looking at updating my board and was just looking around. After a quick chat with John to narrow down which board to pick, he made it easier than going into a store. He helped out with an additional discount that no other website could beat. Too hard to pass up a great deal, I bought the board and bindings. Cheers to debuting it before the season ends!

She knew exactly what I was looking for...

I already knew what skis I was trying to find, based on the conditions I wanted to ski and also based on my skill level. Not only did she recommend the exact skis that I had been looking for, but she also recommended a better set of bindings than the ones I had previously thought were a good fit. I love that she's a neighbor over in VT while I'm in NH, so she knows East Coast (Ice Coast) skiing like I do. I'm so excited for the deal I just landed on brand new 2025 skis, and I have Shannon to thank for helping me narrow down the perfect fit. I'm just so sad to hear this amazing company is closing its doors, but while the deals are good and before they go, I will be recommending them to everyone I know! Thanks again, Shannon! Happy skiing!

Noah helped me tremendously. I kind of knew what I wanted but by asking the right questions, he helped point me in the best direction for my changing skill level and age and kind of terrain I'd be skiing more since moving to a different state. He took everything into account. He gave me choices for each item I wanted---skis, bindings, poles---and put together a perfect curation! I'm super stoked to be able to take advantage of the discounts of course, but I never would've been able to do that or even find such great equipment without Noah's help!
