Do ski helmets really help?
Ski helmets help protect the wearer's head and offer needed protection for new skiers all the way up to the most proficient professionals. Not only do helmets protect against objects like tree branches, rogue chairlift footrests, or runaway gear, but they also help protect the head and brain in the event of a crash. Ski helmets should be worn by skiers of any level in an attempt to reduce head injuries or brain trauma when skiing.
Do I need MIPS helmet for skiing?
MIPS® is not an essential feature for the function of ski helmets, but the added protection is very much worth the small increase in cost. By adding a low-friction layer, MIPS® helmets help reduce rotational force to the head during certain angled impacts. This technology can reduce harmful rotational motion that might otherwise be transferred to the user’s head. Helmets with MIPS® are worth the investment for added safety.
How often should I get a new helmet?
Assuming that it is used a normal amount, stored properly, and never previously involved in a crash, a ski helmet should be replaced approximately every five years. Most skiers are involved in some sort of a crash and the helmet sustains damage before this expiration date. Because helmets are only designed to protect against one high-speed crash, skiers should replace their helmets after such an incident. They should also inspect their helmet regularly for damage from smaller crashes and replace helmets if any damage is compromising the integrity of the helmet.
