How we tested

When you’re looking for the right clubs, nothing beats advice from a Real Expert. Every club on this list has been tested by someone who knows golf inside and out. People who wake up at 6am to practice chipping and putting before their tee time, who know the difference between Bermuda, Bentgrass, and Fescue, who want to try every new head and shaft that hits the market — you know the type! Collectively, Curated Real Experts have tested hundreds of clubs from different brands, and they’re given no incentives to choose one over another.

If you’re looking for more personalized advice, you can chat with one of our Real Experts and get product picks!

Which clubs should a beginner start with?

It is important to start off with some of the basic cornerstones of the golf bag to ensure you have the necessities covered. It's not necessary to start with a complete 14-club set as that can lead to some confusion for what clubs to play in certain situations.

Starting out, it is recommended to have the following:

  • Driver
  • Iron set (consisting of at least a 7 iron, 9 iron, and Pitching Wedge to begin with)
  • Sand Wedge
  • Putter

A wood with larger sweet spot, ideally a driver, will help to get a feel for tee shots. A basic iron set with a few mid to short irons will help out with approach shots and iron fundamentals. A sand wedge will be important to have to learn chip shots and have a tool to use in the sand. And every golfer needs a putter to get the ball in the hole. These clubs will cover a majority of the shots that beginners will face as they learn the game and the fundamentals.

How much should a beginner expect to spend on golf clubs?

Anywhere from $600 to $1400 will get a player some quality starter clubs that will last them beyond the beginner stage. Quality clubs are a better investment in the long run and this route essentially saves money.

How many clubs in a set does a beginner need?

Eleven clubs would be the ideal number to have everything covered. For example, Driver, 3 Wood, 4 Hybrid, 5-PW, SW, Putter. Some sets will come with an extra hybrid instead of a 5 iron, which is good too.

Best Beginner Clubs for Your First Set

Ideal for
  • Newer players looking for the most forgiveness

  • Helping out with a slice

  • Easy launch and distance

Not ideal for
  • Advanced players looking for shot shaping

  • Players who have faster swing speeds

  • Golfers who prefer hitting long irons over hybrids

This set comes with everything a player needs to head straight out onto the course. It includes a Driver, 3 & 5 Woods, 4 & 5 Hybrids, 6-9 Irons, Pitching Wedge, Sand Wedge, Putter and Bag. All of the clubs are as forgiving as it gets to help develop confidence for the newer player and help them see some height in their shots, which is always a challenge for a beginner or higher handicap player. Allows new and developing golfers to really focus on swing fundamentals while letting the clubs do the rest.

Not ideal for
  • Players looking for the lightest weight club option

  • Players looking to shape their ball flight

  • More advanced golfers scoring below 85

The Monroe SURGE complete set is a great quality option recommended for players wanting more quality and performance than an entry-level set of clubs. The driver, fairway wood, and hybrid are very easy to launch and provide effortless power. The cavity back steel-shafted irons provide a weight that isn't too light for a more penetrating ball flight. A forged sand wedge is very uncommon in package sets, so having this is a major bonus for feel, spin, and control around the greens. Added quality touches like a milled-face fang putter and embroidered club head covers make this an outstanding set.
