How we tested

When you’re looking for the right clubs, nothing beats advice from a Real Expert. Every club on this list has been tested by someone who knows golf inside and out. People who wake up at 6am to practice chipping and putting before their tee time, who know the difference between Bermuda, Bentgrass, and Fescue, who want to try every new club head and shaft that hits the market— you know the type! Collectively, our Real Experts have tested hundreds of clubs from different brands, and they’re given no incentives to choose one over another. Which golf clubs should a beginner start with?

Starting the game of golf can be intimidating and knowing what clubs to use is equally challenging. A new golfer does not have to purchase an entire set of clubs. The maximum number of clubs in a set is 14, but starting out you will only need between 7 and 10 clubs. First, you will need a club to drive with for maximum distance, so a driver or a 3 wood is fine. You will also need a club to hit from the fairway. A 5 wood or a hybrid will give you good distance on longer par 4s and par 5s and potentially on longer par 3s. As for irons I would recommend having 5, 7, 9, pitching wedge and possibly a sand wedge (optional). And lastly, you will need a putter to round out your set.

How much should a beginner spend on golf clubs?

How much a beginner should spend on golf clubs is very subjective and it's important to consider how often she'll be playing, how serious she is about getting better, and what her baseline swing looks like right now. Generally speaking though, for most beginners, there are a number of high quality starter sets available for less than $1,000.

How many clubs in a set does a beginner need?

For beginners, keeping the golf set simple is key. Too many clubs can make decision-making more difficult and since carry distances are inconsistent when learning how to play golf, a full set of 14 clubs is not truly needed. A driver, a wood, 1-2 hybrids, a few mid-range irons (5, 7, 9), two wedges, and a putter are essential. Anywhere between a 10 to 12-club set would be sufficient for someone just starting out.
